Q: When can I register for an internship?
A: The internship is part of your overall graduation plan you make with your advisor.
General requirements include: a minimum of 24 credits in your major, successful completion of the application to register for an internship submitted to the department by the deadline (approximately mid-term time each Fall and Spring semester) to be considered for the following semester.
Q: How can I create a successful internship application?
A: The committee looks for students who are well-prepared for the internship experience. Polish your resume ... samples are available in the Internship Manual, volunteer and participate in activities on campus to gain experience, meet regularly with your advisor to make certain you taking courses in the best possible sequence and time frame, and seek guidance regularly in order to perform at your highest level in all of your classes.
Q: My advisor wants me to wait until the end of my junior year or the beginning of my senior year to register for an internship. Why?
A: Every situation is unique, but there are a few reasons why you received this suggestion. 1.) Most Media & Film entry-level jobs are not routinely advertised to the public. Instead, employers hire from from within the ranks of current interns. Even if you are a highly successful sophmore intern, it is highly unlikely that a workplace would hold a job for you for 2 years or more. On the other hand, if you are just about to graduate you might be one of the candidates they consider. 2.) The more you know, the better job you can do! The job responsibilites of an Intern can vary widely. The more skills and knowledge you have acquired from advanced-level classes and experience you have aquired from working in campus media will allow you to excel in more creative roles at work.
